Yes, you can ride before you buy. Test rides at Mini EVs are free, no purchase required, and you don’t strictly need an appointment to walk in and try something. They happen at our Capalaba retail store, where the range of over 40 electric scooters, e-bikes and boards sits on the floor. A booking isn’t a formality: it’s what gets your chosen scooter off the shelf, charged, tyres set, and standing by the door rather than boxed in the stockroom.

If you don’t know which model you want yet, book anyway and say so. Tell us your ride: commute distance, hills, whether you’re carrying a bag, whether it has to go up stairs or into a car boot. We’ll have some sensible options ready instead of walking you around the floor cold.

Walk-ins are welcome. The trade-off is availability, since a model you had your heart set on may be out with another rider, so ringing ahead is the way to avoid wait times.

All of them, within reason. The range of electric rideables on the Capalaba floor covers e-scooters, a range of electric bikes, electric skateboards, e-motorcycles and the smaller e-rides, with brands including Voltrium, Bolzzen, AUSOM, iScooter, Dragon, Mearth, Apollo, Aventon, Velectrix, Evolve, Benzina Zero and Razor. Ask us which of them are set up to ride on the day you’re coming in.

A few practical notes on what a demo of each actually tells you:

Range is the one thing a short in-store ride genuinely cannot answer, and it’s the number people most want tested. Ask us about the claimed range instead, then discount it for your own weight, the hills on your route and the temperature. Battery care matters more than the sticker number over the life of the ride, which is why our guide to battery life maintenance is worth a read before you commit.

A quick handover, then you ride. A staff member runs you through the controls: power on, throttle or assist mode, brakes, lights, horn, and how to fold it if it folds. You’ll ride within the demo area we point out, at low speed, with a helmet on. Safe riding is the only rule that isn’t negotiable.

Take a phone photo of the display screen before you set off if you’re comparing models. Two scooters can feel identical at first and completely different once you know one was in eco mode and the other in sport.

Things worth doing deliberately while you’re on it, because most people forget:

1. Grab the brakes hard once, at low speed, in a straight line. You want to know how it stops before you need to know.
2. Ride one-handed briefly to check the bars aren’t twitchy. User-friendly controls should feel obvious inside a minute.
3. Stop, then pick the whole thing up. If you live upstairs or load it into a boot, the folded weight is the deciding factor more often than the top speed.
4. Try the throttle from a standstill on the slightest incline you can find. Weak low-end torque is the most common regret.
5. Look at where your hands and feet actually sit. A deck slightly narrower than you’d like becomes a real problem on a long commute. On e-bikes, comfortable seats are worth just as much attention.

Ride within your personal capabilities and follow instructions from staff. You are responsible for any loss or damage arising from your riding during a demo, so keep the speed sensible and stay in the area shown to you. Use the safety equipment at all times.

Closed shoes, at a minimum. Thongs and a throttle are a poor combination, and we’d rather tell you now than at the door. Some stores ask to sight photo identification or something showing your permanent address before a demo, so check with our staff when you book and they’ll confirm what’s needed on the day.

Bring your own helmet if you have one, since a helmet that already fits you tells you more about how the ride feels than a loaner does. If you don’t own one yet, ask us: our guide to choosing the right helmet is a good place to start.

If you’re buying for a child, bring the child. Kids’ balance bikes and Razor dirt bikes are sized to the rider, and standover height is not something you can judge from a product photo.

Some are, some aren’t, and it depends on the specific model, not the category. Queensland sets limits on power and speed for personal mobility devices and for e-bikes, and plenty of high-powered machines sold in Australia are legal on private property only. Tell us where you plan to ride before you buy, and we’ll tell you straight whether the model in your hands fits those road rules.

The fastest e-bike you can ride without a licence in Queensland is one that meets the standard pedal-assist limits, with assistance cutting out at 25 km/h and motor power capped by regulation to keep it in the e-bike category. Anything beyond that is generally treated as a motorbike, which brings registration, licensing and helmet standards with it. Riders caught on a non-compliant machine on a public road risk fines, since it’s treated as an unregistered motor vehicle rather than a bicycle.

Age and supervision requirements also apply to personal mobility devices in Queensland, so a younger rider’s options may be narrower than an adult’s. This is the part of a test ride that a marketplace listing can’t give you. A private seller will not tell you the machine is unroadworthy.

Our Mount Gravatt site at 1484 Logan Rd (parking off Bothwell St, inside Aussie Mobile Phone Repairs) is a service and repair centre only, with a small display of around five models. You can’t browse the full range or test ride there. For repairs, call 0405 196 212. It’s open Monday to Wednesday 8:30am to 5:00pm, Thursday 8:30am to 8:00pm, Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm and Saturday 8:30am to 2:00pm, closed Sunday.

Come in gear you’d actually commute in if you can. Riding a scooter in a work shirt with a laptop bag on your back is a different experience to riding it empty-handed, and it’s the one that matters.

Nothing, if you’re not ready. There’s no obligation attached to a demo, and plenty of people ride a few models across a couple of visits before deciding.

If you do buy, the part that outlasts the honeymoon is the servicing. Mini EVs is an authorised dealer and repair centre, so warranty work happens in the MiniEVs Workshop rather than being shipped interstate.
